A practice of looking, wondering & making.
My work begins with curiosity.
An interest in shape, texture and material. A feeling I can't quite put into words. An object, a space or an idea that makes me look twice.
I'm drawn to the process of exploring without knowing exactly where it will lead. To working with my hands, following an intuition and allowing something to take shape along the way.
My practice moves between art and design, with painting as one of its central expressions. Across different forms, I'm interested in the relationship between simplicity, material, space and the things we notice when we take a closer look.
the
paintings
My paintings are made by hand in my studio in Diest, Belgium.
Working on raw cotton canvas with acrylic paint, I build up layers of colour, shape and texture. I rarely begin with a fixed plan. Instead, I work intuitively, responding to what is already there and deciding what the work needs next.
Some layers remain visible. Others disappear beneath the surface. Small irregularities become part of the finished piece, traces of the process rather than imperfections to be corrected.
For me, painting is a way of slowing down and paying attention. Each work develops at its own pace, through a series of decisions, adjustments and unexpected discoveries.
Every painting is an original, made from the first layer to the last in my studio.
Painting is one part of a broader creative practice.
I'm interested in how we experience the things around us:
from the objects we live with to the spaces we inhabit and the ideas that shape our perspective. These interests often lead me beyond the canvas, towards new materials, forms and ways of making.
Through Waldhaus, I bring these explorations together. Some become artworks. Others may develop into publications, creative tools or entirely new projects.
The form can change. The curiosity remains.
an ongoing exploration
